Custer County’s first federal highway was a wagon road

Archaeologist Jack Beale Smith of Oklahoma City and Custer County Commissioner Lyle Miller have teamed together to erect signs around the county recognizing a major historical event from the county’s early history — the construction of Beale Wagon Road across a large portion of Oklahoma and the construction of scores of supposedly temporary wooden bridges for use by wagon trains hauling supplies across the country.
