Library rewards students in summer reading program

To encourage  student involvement in its Summer Reading Program, Clinton Public Library offered participants a chance at winning two Kindle Fires this year. The winners were announced after the program recently wrapped up, with the tablet computers being awarded to Mia Vasquez, 7, and Juan Marquez, 12.
Assistant Librarian Theresa Simmons said many students’ reading skills become rusty over the long summer break, so the goal of the library’s program is to help them maintain those skills. She explained that the rules allow for many different types of reading activities, including reading magazines, comic books, e-books, and even being read to by an older family member. She said all those activities qualify as reading and have been shown to help children maintain their reading skills over the break.
Simmons said the library divided Summer Reading students into two age groups for the first time this year, one for students 12 and under, and another for students 13 and over. However, 12-year-old students were allowed the option of joining the older group, Simmons said, to allow for those with more advanced reading skills, which is what Marquez opted to do.
