Ina Lee Wherritt

Funeral services for Ina Lee Wherritt, 93, of Thomas, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church of Thomas, with Pastor Jerry Yoder officiating.

Mrs. Wherritt died Tuesday, June 30, 2015, at Corn Heritage Village of Weatherford.

She was born July 9, 1921 at Liberty Center to John Phillip South and Ruby Ann (McClure) South. She attended school at Liberty Center and graduated from Leedey High School.

On Feb. 28, 1942, she married George Edwin Wherritt, and they moved during World War II to Wichita, Kan. where both worked at Boeing.

They then moved to Greasy Corner, just south of Leedey. They farmed for a few years and then in 1953 moved to Thomas.

They opened Wherritt Dry Goods, which Ina ran while she raised three children, managed a house and large garden, sewed and was involved in the First Baptist Church.

After her husband’s death in 1986, she returned in earnest to her hobby of quilting. Dementia may have taken her memories, but she retained her quick wit and sense of humor always.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Edwin; her parents, J.P. and Ruby South; two sisters, Emma Britton and Johnnie May Hall; and one brother, Bill South.

Survivors include a sister, Allene Foster; a daughter, Edwina Ann (Wendi) and her husband, Robert Brimmer, of Thomas; two sons, Barton Wherritt, and his wife, Karen, of Custer City, and Phil Wherritt and his wife, Jane, of Thomas; five grandchildren, Rodney Wherritt, and his wife, Roshelle, of Thomas, Butch Wherritt, and his wife, Kasey, of Custer City, Renae Haymaker, and her husband, Drew, of Enid, Kristi Wherritt, of Dodge City, Kan., and John Bergum, and his wife, Dawn, of Cocolalla, Idaho; seven great-grandchildren, Kole Wherritt and Kaleb Schrock, of Custer City; Regan, Roselind and Rayne Wherritt, of Thomas, Jesse Haymaker, of Enid; and Kira Bergumd of Cocolalla, Idaho.

Burial will be in the Mound Valley Cemetery, Thomas.

The family suggests memorial contributions in honor of Mrs. Wherritt may be made to First Baptist Church, Thomas.
