Dacus Berry
Funeral services for Dacus Lavern Berry were held at 10 a.m. today at New Beginnings Assembly of God in Cordell.
He died Friday, Sept. 11, 2015, at the Cordell Christian Home.
He was born July 31, 1930, in the Lake Valley community the son of George and Leone (Isbell) Berry. He attended school in the Lake Valley and Cloud Chief communities through the eighth grade, finishing his high school education by correspondence at the age of 36.
He went to work at age 14 at Jiggs Produce and Creamery. In 1949, he moved to California and worked in the San Joaquin Valley on a grape ranch. In 1950, he married Peggy June Ellis at Sentinel and they lived the first three years of their married life in California. Moving back to Oklahoma in 1954, he resumed work for Jiggs Botchlett at the turkey ranch where he worked for the next 23 years.
He went to work for the Farmers’ Cooperative Association in Cordell in 1967 and remained in the grain elevator business until his retirement in 1996. In 1993 he was recognized as Oklahoma Cooperative Manager of the Year.
He was also dedicated to his church, serving for many years as deacon and Sunday school superintendent at First Assembly of God in Cordell. After retirement, he farmed and ranched in the Cordell area until his health began to fail in 2012 at which time he became a resident of the Cordell Christian home until his death.
Preceding him in death were his parents, George and Leone (Isbell) Berry; a grandson, Reed Alan Corbin; a son-in-law, Cliff Corbin; four brothers and two sisters.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy, a son, Lavern “Straw” Berry and his wife, Penny, and a daughter, Wanelda Corbin, all of Cordell; four grandchildren, Jay Edelen and his wife, Christy, of Arapaho, Chelsey Derieg of Cordell, Jamie Allen and her husband, Rick, of Gracemont, Julie Thomas and her husband, Seth, of Cordell; seven great grandchildren, Jace, Katie, Easton, Hadley, Presli, Mady and Walker; and other family members.
