Roy Creswell

A Chapel service for Roy “Mert” Creswell, 79, of Clinton, will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2015.

He died Saturday, Nov. 7, 2015, in the Weatherford Regional Hospital in Weatherford.

He was born Feb. 10, 1936, to C.E. Creswell and Vivian (Lott) Creswell in Hargill, Texas. He was raised in the Valley in Texas until he was 7 years old, and then moved with his family to Rotan, Texas where he attended part of his schooling. The family moved again to Snyder, Texas where he attended school through his junior year.  Along with a cousin he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1954 on the buddy system. He served in Korea and was honorably discharged in 1957 in the rank of Sergeant.  He attended barber school and opened a barber shop in Snyder.  He was married to Viola Rose Roemisch on Aug. 16, 1958.

They made their first home in Snyder, where he continued to barber. In 1965 the family moved to Hobbs, N.M., and then settled in Clinton in 1978, where he worked in the oil field. He was forced to retire in 2007 due to medical reasons.

He was a member of the Clinton Round-Up Club and loved the trail rides. He was a Hub City Square Dancer, loved the outdoors, and enjoyed camping out and woodworking. Singing was always a passion.

When he was only nine years old he sang in a trio, and they were invited to Dallas, Texas on several occasions to sing with the Stamps Quartet.  He enjoyed singing with his family through the years at different family functions. In his younger years he enjoyed playing softball with the church league.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Pat Edwards; and a brother, Bud Creswell.

He is survived by his wife, Viola, of the home; two daughters, Paula Mayes and husband, Steve, of Hobbs, NM, and Marla Ashmore and husband, David, of Broken Arrow; and two sons, Steve Creswell and wife, Connie, of Elk City, and John Creswell and wife, Toni, of Weatherford.

He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Kara Grantham and husband, Clay, of Granite Shoals, Texas, Brandon Mayes, of Las Cruces, N.M., Kyle Mayes and wife, Kimberley, of Hobbs, N.M., Ashley Creswell, of Clinton, Shae Creswell, of Yukon, Erica Creswell, of Weatherford, Derek Creswell and wife, Rachel, of Weatherford, Dillon Travis, of Mannford, Roxy Ashmore, and Haven Ashmore, both of Broken Arrow; four great-grandchildren, Dayton, Harlee, Daron and Avery; and niece Vicki Norell and husband, David, of Victoria, Texas.

Services will be officiated by Rev. Earl Stephenson. Interment will follow in the Clinton Cemetery, under the direction of the Kiesau-Lee Funeral Home.
