Man who stole about 40 semi tires sought
An arrest warrant has been issued for an Oklahoma City man charged with stealing $12,000 worth of truck tires and an 18-foot trailer to haul them in from K&S Tires in Clinton.
The theft took place Feb. 27. The suspect is William C. Smith, 34.
Police pinpointed Smith as the suspect through the use of GPS tracking equipment in a company pickup he was allegedly driving when the trailer and tires were stolen.
The trailer was valued at $3,000, making the total of stolen goods approximately $15,000.
An affidavit of probable cause written by a Clinton police officer said Lt. Shane Harrelson of the CPD met the morning of Feb. 27 with K&S Tires employee Manuel Castro at the business, 204 Frisco Ave. Castro told him when he arrived at work that day, he found that someone had broken into a fenced-in area and stolen the 18-foot utility trailer and approximately 40 semi tires.
He said he had watched security video from the store and seen a white Ford F250 pickup with camper driving next to the business. Harrelson said the vehicle drove around and appeared to enter the fenced lot and then go out of camera view. Castro identified the pickup as possibly belonging to American Pipe Inspection of Tulsa.
The next day he told Harrelson that he had contacted American Pipe Inspection and an employee there, Angie Nelson, was able to confirm that the F250 pickup seen on the video did belong to the company. Harrelson then called Ms. Nelson who told him not only did it belong to her company, at the time of the theft it was supposed to be in the custody of employee William Case Smith.
Lieutenant Harrelson then obtained a copy of GPS records for the vehicle. He said they indicated it was in Clinton near K&S Tires from 1:58 a.m. till 2:57 a.m. the morning of Feb. 27. It then left K&S and went to the Lucky Star Casino but returned to the tire store at 4:09 a.m.
At 4:38 a.m. the GPS records showed it then traveled to Hydro, making a stop there at 5:04 a.m., before leaving at 5:29 a.m. and going on to Oklahoma City.
Harrelson also obtained video from the Lucky Star Casino which he said showed the pickup and the driver. He let Ms. Nelson look at it, and she allegedly identified the driver as Smith.
In addition, the officer got a security video from the Hydro Quick Stop which he said showed the same pickup coming into Hydro at 5:03 a.m. on the 27th pulling a utility trailer loaded with tires and another pickup following.
Harrelson wrote that after another few minutes both pickups are seen leaving town but with the trailer loaded with tires now being pulled by the pickup that was following when they arrived.
An arrest warrant was issued for Smith and continues in effect.
