Funeral services for Stephen Charles Engleman are scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday at McFarlin Methodist Church in Norman.
Engleman passed away peacefully on December 13, 2018. He was born on July 3, 1948, in Oklahoma City. At seven months of age, Steve was lovingly adopted by Charles Edward and Lela Jean (Garnett) Engleman of Clinton, Okla. where he was raised.
In his early years, Steve was involved in Boy Scouts, baseball, and go-carting. From an early age, he threw a paper route for the family newspaper, The Clinton Daily News. By the time he was sixteen, he had enough money saved from his route to pay for his first car, a 1965 bronze Ford Mustang.
At Clinton High School, Steve was the yearbook photographer, ran track, and played football. He was all-district guard on the 1965 Red Tornado state championship team.
Upon graduating high school, Steve attended The University of Oklahoma where he was a proud member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. During this time he also served in the United States Army Reserves. In 1972 he earned an O.U. degree in journalism.
Putting his degree into practice, Steve spent the next year in Lake Tahoe, California selling advertising for the Tahoe Daily Tribune. He then spent the next twelve years working for the family newspaper in Clinton as advertising representative and associate publisher.
On a blind date in 1974, Steve met Jackie Renfro in Norman, Okla. They married on June 5, 1976, at Crown Heights Methodist Church in Oklahoma City. While making their home in Clinton for the next eight years, Steve served as President of The Rotary Club International and The Jaycees. They were blessed with two sons, Ryan (1979) and Patrick (1982).
When Steve purchased The Moore Monitor (American) and The Penny Pincher in Moore, Okla. in 1984, the young family settled in Norman. From 1990-91 Steve served his alma mater as President of the O.U. Alumni Association. He also was a member of the O.U. Athletic Council.
Steve and Jackie loved cruising the world! Their travels took them all across the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii twice, Canada, Mexico, South and Central America, British Isles, Northern and Central Europe, and the Caribbean 12 times!
Steve was preceded in death by his parents Jean and Charlie Engleman and mother-in-law Bobie Brogden Renfro.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jackie; loyal and loving sons, Ryan Stephen Engleman (Jennifer) and Patrick Garnett Engleman; love-of-his-life grandson, James Ryan (J.R.)Engleman; sister, Carol Engleman Sander (Gary); sisters-in-law, Teresa Renfro Collins (Mike) and Pam Renfro Hudson; father-in-law, Jack Renfro; aunt, Ruth Garnett Sharpe; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Steve will be greatly missed by all who knew him. May he rest in peace.
