Aubrey Neal Cowan

Funeral services for Aubrey Neal Cowan, 82-year-old Weatherford resident, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church in Weatherford with Earl Stephenson officiating.

Cowan died  Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2014, at Corn Heritage Village in Weatherford. He was born April 16, 1932 in Mangum, the son of Burl Truitt and Evie Lorraine (Gammell) Cowan.

While growing up, he resided in Mangum, Sayre, Weatherford and Altus, graduating from Altus High School in 1952.

Cowan served in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955 and was stationed in France during the Korean War.

Upon his discharge from the Army, he entered Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford.  He graduated from SWOSU in 1961 and married Nancy Kirby of Sentinel.

Cowan was ordained as a Baptist minister in 1956 and served as the pastor of the following churches: Colony Indian Baptist (2 years), Strong City Baptist (4 years), Delhi Baptist (1½ years), First Baptist Church of Lone Wolf (1½ years), First Baptist Church of Mountain View (11 years), First Baptist Church of Cheyenne (11 yrs), First Baptist Church of Snyder (6 years), Deer Creek Baptist of Edmond (2 years) and Pleasant Valley Baptist of Hydro (13 years).

Upon his retirement, Aubrey and Nancy moved their membership to the First Baptist Church of Weatherford.

Preceding him in death were his parents and a sister, Virginia Stookesberry.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Nancy, of their home in Weatherford; two sons, Greg Cowan of Garnett, Kan. and Brad Cowan and his wife, Kris of Goodland, Kan.; a daughter, Missy Heard and her husband, Corky, of Clinton; a sister, Jo Haney and her husband, Charles, of Cleveland, Tenn.; six grandchildren, Brandon Cowan and his wife, Kayla, Amber Reents and her husband, Colt, Jason Cowan, Lacie Cowan, Jessica Heard and Harley Heard; two great-grandsons, Cason Reents and Braxton Cowan; and special friends: Robert Lindamood of Weatherford and Kathi Davis of Topeka, Kan.

Burial will follow at Cheyenne Cemetery in Cheyenne, under the direction of Lockstone Funeral Home in Weatherford.
