Richard Carl Muno

Services are scheduled Friday with graveside at Gracelawn Cemetery in Edmond and a memorial service at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 1300 E. 33rd St., Edmond, for wood and bronze artist Richard Carl Muno, 76, of Edmond.

Muno died Tuesday, July 28, 2015, after a long battle with Alz-heimer’s. He was born July 2, 1939, in Arapaho, the son of Rudolph and Julie Muno, and the fourth of five children.

Beginning early in life, Muno showed a talent for art. From the age of 9, he loved wood carving and often made his own toys on the farm.

This love continued to develop into bronze sculpture.

Upon graduating from high school, Muno began pursuing a commercial art and advertising degree at Oklahoma State Tech in Okmulgee.

While there, he met and fell in love with Norma Faye Simpson. They were married Oct. 14, 1960.

During this time, Muno also served in the Army National Guard. He worked five years at the Thomas Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, serving positions as preparator and photographer.

He spent 20 years at the National Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Center in Oklahoma City in positions of managing director, deputy director, art director, curator and exhibit specialist.

In 1985 he chose to become a full-time sculptor and woodcarver.

He created numerous gallery works in wood and bronze for private, corporate and foreign collectors.

Muno also has life sized and heroic sized bronze sculptures in Clinton, Edmond and Oklahoma City as well as Pampa, Texas, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Boston, Mass.

Muno gained many honors and awards for his artwork, including listings in Who’s Who in American Art, Who’s Who in the Southwest, Men of Achievement and Dictionary of American Sculptors.

Preceding him in death were his parents; a sister, Pauline Schmidt; and a brother and sister-in-law, Ted and Nadine Muno.

Survivors include his wife, Norma; a daughter, Iris Muno Jordan; a son and daughter-in-law, Will and Summer Muno; grandchildren, Pacie, Kylie and Addison Muno, all of Edmond; his brothers, Clarence (Gail) Muno of Clinton and Edward (Vera) Muno of Edmond; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
