Woman nabbed after 10-mile chase on S.H. 73

Authorities say a 26-year-old woman who allegedly led Clinton police on a 10-mile automobile pursuit Thursday night has been charged with numerous crimes.
The suspect is Kaidee Yates of Clinton. Detective Sgt. Ray Hammans said she was arrested for eluding and when she got out of the 2006 Lexus she was driving she dropped a bag of cocaine on the ground. He said officers then found a bag of marijuana in the driver’s seat.
“Based on their observations, they thought she was under the influence of drugs so she was charged with DUI drugs,” said Hammans, plus possession of marijuana, cocaine and eluding.
The chase began about 9:40 p.m. at Modelle Avenue and S. 19th Street where Officer Greg Perez allegedly saw Ms. Yates run a stop sign. The pursuit continued west for 10 miles after Modelle turned into State Highway 73.
“She slowed down three different times, almost coming to a complete stop,” said Hammans. “Her top speed was about 75 miles per hour.”
Hammans said she was finally stopped by two Custer County sheriff’s deputies, Dan Brownfield and Nick Doe, who did a rolling roadblock in front of her.
The detective didn’t think there were any close calls with other traffic but said the pursuing officers reported her “all over the road” at times.
Besides the stop sign at Modelle and 19th, he said she also ran a red light at Modelle and Gary Boulevard just as the chase was getting underway. Officer Ryan Richert of the CPD assisted Perez in the pursuit.
Yates had no passengers in her car.
Other recent activity by Clinton police has included:
• The arrest of Mitchell Spearman, 34, on Jan. 29 for assault and battery against his former girlfriend, Kelsi Cardenas.
Officer Richert was dispatched that night to the AllianceHealth hospital where Ms. Cardenas was seeking treatment.
She told him she and Spearman were at a friend’s house in the 500 block of N. Seventh Street and he (Spearman) would not let her leave. She said they got into an argument and he slapped her and slammed her against a wall.
Hammans said Cardenas was not seriously injured but Richert could see that one eye was red and bloodshot. Officers found Spearman that night and arrested him.
• Theft of a gray 2011 Ford Mustang belonging to Omar Barrientos of Clinton.
Officer Peter Porcher responded the night of the 26th to 315 S. Sixth St. where Barrientos told him he had come home about 8 p.m. and run into his house, leaving the motor running on his car. When he returned about 15 minutes later, the car was gone.
As Hammans was speaking Friday, the car was still missing and there were no suspects.
“I know it’s winter time and people do that,” he said, “but I strongly discourage it.”
• Arrest of Evan Atchley, 25, of Clinton, following a foot chase by Officer Bill Gersternkorn.
Hammans said Atchley was wanted on a felony warrant and Gersternkorn saw him at the OK First Stop in the 1300 block of Gary. He allegedly took off running but later a set of digital scales, a meth pipe, and a couple of small bags of methamphetamine were found near where he was arrested. Hammans said the suspect admitted they were his and that he had thrown them down as he was running.
The suspect was wanted on a felony warrant for violation of a suspended sentence in a 2017 drug case.
