Clinton firefighters poke through tall dead grass looking for hot spots after extinguishing a blaze Thursday along railroad tracks south of the Washita River between N. 13th Street and U.S. Highway 183. From the left are Brett Russell, Caleb Moore and Aaron Snider.

High temps, strong winds rekindle fire danger

“With the water situation like it is, we’d like to not have to use anymore than necessary putting out grass fires,” he said. “Not that we won’t, we’d just rather have it be an act of nature rather than somebody setting one and letting it get away from them.” Fire Chief Randy Carpenter

This has been a good summer for area firefighters, but Clinton Chief Randy Carpenter said Friday it’s no time for people to get complacent.
“It’s getting scary. It really is,” Carpenter said after his men doused a small blaze Thursday in thick, thigh-high Johnson grass along the Farmrail right-of-way north of town that also got into a nearby dry creek bed near the Washita River.
