Sheriff throws in towel on budget squabble

Sheriff Bruce Peoples lost his latest battle with Custer County commissioners late Monday morning, as they refused to take $920 for a touch-screen monitor out of a $4.2-million trust fund composed of money left over from construction of the County Jail.
That means the money must come from the sheriff’s maintenance and operation fund which he contends is already perilously low with the fiscal year just starting.
Peoples has said the monitor is needed to open and close doors inside the jail, as well as to turn lights on and off and control speakers to individual cells. The monitor also controls the flushing of toilets by inmates and the turning of water on and off in cells.
