Byron Glenn Cox

Funeral services for Weatherford Police Chief Byron Glenn Cox, 57, of Weatherford, were scheduled for 2 p.m. today (Tuesday) at the Weatherford First Baptist Church, with Pastor Earl Stephenson officiating.
Cox was born Dec. 18, 1956, in Ada, the son of Darwin Glen and Gela (Abston) Cox. He died Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, at his home in Weatherford.
The police chief was raised in Ada before moving with his family to California in 1967. In September of 1970, Cox was baptized.
In 1971, his family returned to Oklahoma and moved to Weatherford, where he attended school, graduating from Weatherford High School with the Class of 1975.
Cox began working with the Weatherford Police Department as a dispatcher in 1977. On Feb. 10, 1979, he married Elsie Bartel in Weatherford. He was promoted to patrolman in 1980, continuing his long career in law enforcement.
He attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University and graduated in 1992 with a Bachelor’s degree.
In 1999, after 22 years with the Weatherford Police Department, he became chief of police, a position he held for 14 years.
Cox was a member of the First Baptist Church of Weatherford, CLEET Executive Council, Oklahoma Chiefs of Police and the Multi County Youth Services board of directors in Clinton.
He sang in the church and volunteered at the Kiwanis Baseball Park. He faced many health challenges with the progression of diabetes the last two years.
Preceding him in death were his parents and one brother, Randall Kevin.
Survivors include his wife, Elsie Cox, of the home; two sons, Michael Cox and his wife, Terese, of Chicago, Ill., and Matthew Cox of Weatherford; two grandchildren, Nathaniel and James; one brother, Anthony Cox and his wife, Kristine; and many nieces and nephews.
Family suggested memorial contributions in his honor be made to the First Baptist Church or the Multi-County Youth Services emergency youth shelter.
Burial will be in Weatherford’s Greenwood Cemetery, under the direction of Lockstone Funeral Home.
