Catherine Frances Hawk “Dakota Cistinah Win”

Funeral services for Catherine Frances Hawk “Dakota Cistinah Win”, 52, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Hammon Indian Community Building in Hammon, officiated by Mona Bearshield and spiritual leaders Gary Holy Bull and Thomas “Sonny” LaBlanc.

An all-night wake service will be at 7 p.m. Friday in the Hammon Indian Community Building.

Ms. Hawk was born in Clinton to Freeman White Hawk , Sr., and Irene Swiftbird and died March 8, 2014 in Fargo, N.D.

She was an enrolled member of the Southern Cheyenne/Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma. She attended numerous schools in several states the most memorable time being when she attended Concho Indian Boarding School in Concho, Ft. Sill Indian School in Lawton and Central High “Indian Center Inc.,” Los Angeles, Calif.

She obtained her general education development certificate from S.W.C.C. She was involved with the Buffalo Lake Sun Dance in the early days as a cook’s helper.

She was a direct descendent of a long line of Cheyenne chiefs and headsmen, including famed Southern Chief Whirlwind, Chief White Hawk, Chief John Otter  by “Lean Elk,” her grandfather Chief Amos White Hawk and uncle Chief Leslie Haw.

She also was a direct descendent of Chief Swift Bird of the Two Kettle Band of Lakota. She was also a Southern Cheyenne Sand Creek descendent.
Survivors include five children, Valerie Hawk, of Summit, S.D., Keith Hawk of Sioux Falls, S.D., Diana Pollock, of Los Angeles, Calif., Serena Brant of Sisseton, S.D., Duta Brant, of Valley City, N.D.; nine grandchildren, J.J. Barse, Vivica Barse, Bella Smith, Arianna Hawk, Baby Keith, Danicaca Dumarce Hawk, Alvaya Brant, Drew Brant and Kimimila Brant; her mother, Irene Nelson of Agency Village, S.D.; sisters and brothers,  Shaton Nelson, of Agency Village, S.D., Bonita Tapia, of Dallas, Texas, Rose, and her husband Levi Keoke, Sisseton, S.D., Connie, and her husband, Kenny Brown, of Sisseton, S.D., Ann Hawk of Oklahoma City, Teresa and her husband, Travin Masson, of Bismark, N.D.; and a host of relatives from the Cheyenne River, Crow Creek and Sisseton-Wahpeton Reservations of the Southern Cheyenne Tribe in Wheldome.

She is also survived by her maternal aunts and uncles, Barb and Gig Bordeary of Fort Worth, Texas, Darryl Turgeon of Mesa, Ariz., Larry Tuyrgeon of Pittsburgh, Kan.; adopted mothers, Merla Big Medicine Lopez, Darlene Kitto; adopted brothers, Carlos Kitto and Sal Little; and adopted sisters, Opal and Romeo Renville and Wilma Big Medicine.

Preceding her in death were her fathers, Freeman Hawk Sr. and Peter “Buddy” Nelson; a sister, Rita Nelson; a niece, Rachel Contrera; her paternal grandparents and maternal grandparents, Amos and Anna Hawk, Antoine Swift Bird, Mercy Little Eagle, Dolae Turgeon and Christine Bretzke; her adopted brothers, John Paul Little and Ernest Big Medicine; and adopted father, John Lopez.

Burial will conclude in the Hammon Indian Bethel Mennonite Cemetery, under the direction of Kiesau-Lee Funeral Home in Clinton.
