Charles L. “Johnny” Raff

Graveside services for Charles L. “Johnny” Raff, 93, Custer City resident, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Custer City Masonic Cemetery.

Mr. Raff died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2014, in the Corn Heritage Village in Weatherford.

Charles Lempel “Johnny” Raff was born Feb. 19, 1924, the son of James Howard and Edith (Harris) Raff in Independence. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1940 and served four years before being honorably discharged in 1944.

He married Julia Cole Sept. 12, 1942, in Clinton and they made their first home at Commando Island, Calif., where he was stationed. They returned to Custer County and he farmed for a short time.

They purchased a café in Custer and operated it until he started a career with REA Electric Company. He would retire and continue to live in the Custer City area.

He was a member of the Custer City Baptist Church. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and in his younger years he enjoyed water skiing.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; five brothers, Larson, Marion, Edgar Johnson, Bob Raff and Jr. Raff; three sisters, Doris Sober, Ilene Fergason and Thelma Raff.

He is survived by his daughter, Doris Jean Schoonmaker and her husband, George, of Custer City; his son, Charles Raff, and his wife, Suann, of Miami; three grandchildren, Dawna Mosburg of Broken Arrow, Devin Schoonmaker and his wife, Micci, of Weatherford, and Emily Raff of Owasso; four great grandchildren, Holly Morrow of Mustang, Kelsy Mosburg of Broken Arrow, and Lauren Stringer of Owasso; and one great-great grandchild, Conley Morrow.

Services will be officiated by Rev. Jerry Yoder and burial will be under the direction of the Stanley-Lee Funeral Home.

The family will greet guests from 6-7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
