Mary Elizabeth Calmes Smith

Memorial services for Mary Elizabeth Calmes Smith, 71, of Denton, Texas, will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Denton, with the Revs. Alan Baroody and Lisa Patterson officiating.

Mrs. Smith died Friday, Jan. 23, 2015, at Denton Regional Medical Center. She was born Sept. 8, 1943 in Clinton, the daughter of William E. and Eleanor Hoover Calmes.

In 1965, following graduation from the University of Oklahoma, she married Charles W. Smith.

Following graduate work at Texas Woman’s University she joined the Denton Independent School District where she served in speech therapy and special education supervisory positions for 25 years.

As a speech language pathologist she was an advocate for early childhood development and education as well as the nurturing of talent within her profession.

She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta, the Denton Benefit League, Ariel Club, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International (serving two terms as president of Denton’s Iota Chapter), state and national speech and hearing associations, the Calmes Family Association, Corvette Club of Denton and St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Denton, where she was a member of the women’s Bible study group.

Survivors include her husband, Charles “Chuck” Smith of Denton, Texas; sons, Stephen Smith, and his wife, Danelle, of Dallas, Texas and Michael Smith, of Denton; sisters, Carole Hatcher, of Clinton and Linda Howell, and her husband, Ken, of Oklahoma City.

She will be inurned in the Columbarium at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church.
