Maurice L. Brown

Funeral services for Maurice L. Brown, 43, Geary resident, were held Monday at the Rock of Restoration Church in Geary with Rev. Howard Parker, Rev. Dwight McGee, and Rev. Waylon Upchego officiating.
A wake was observed at the Cheyenne and Arapaho Community Building Sunday evening at Geary. Burial was in the Geary Cemetery.
Brown died Wednesday, May 14, 2014, at his home. He was born on March 11, 1971, in Watonga, the son of Edwina “Beaver” Brown and Robert Chester Brown, Sr.
He grew up in Geary, where he attended Head Start, elementary, junior and senior high schools; graduating in 1989.
After high school he pursued higher education traveling to Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College where he studied business.
During his course of study he was called home to help care for his sick mother. During this time he also began working for Farmer’s Insurance as a claims adjuster.
In 2003, in an effort to be closer to his children, he decided to make Watonga his residence and purchased a home.
At this time he also began a new journey, gaining employment with the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes; performing as general manager for both Watonga and Canton Lucky Star casinos.
In 2012 Maurice accepted a position with Opportunities Inc., where he acted as an accounting clerk. He was employed with the organization when he became ill.
Survivors include his grandmother, Yvonne Pemberton; his children, brothers/spouses, Robbie and Brenda Brown, Dupree and Carla Brown, Hank and Stacy Brown, M.D. and Augustine Spottedcorn, Junior and Michelle Richey, Drill and Tammy Johnston; uncles, H.L. Brown and Andrew Beaver; aunts, Carol Richey, Jerrie, Annette, Vivian and Margie “Brown”; sisters, Andie and Tammy Beaver, Lou, Deana, Charleta and Robie Richey, Rachel and Marty Williams, Barbara Paukei and Tessa Lloyd, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceding him in death were his grandfather, Henry Brown; parents, Edwina and Robert Brown; uncles, Mark WhiteBear, Jack Brown, Ural “Deamon” Richey, Charles “Sugar Bear” Post, Bell and Dennis Moore; sister, Janell Gibson; and nephews, Aven Castleberry and Damon Richey; and an aunt, Yvette Thunderbull.
Arrangements were by Turner Funeral Home, Hinton.
